The New Korean Trend? Foreign Directors Collaborating with Korean Actors - Inbebo

Has a global collaboration film, in which foreign directors work with Korean actors as the main characters, become a new trend?

In the past, there have been cases in which one or two Korean actors participate in a Hollywood movie as supporting actors. And while famous Korean directors have made some global hit films, such as Bong Joon-ho's 'Snowpiercer' (2013) and Park Chan-wook's 'Stalker' (2013), they mainly collaborated with foreign actors. It is rare for a foreign director to make a film with Korean actors as the main characters. However, this year, foreign-directed films starring Korean actors have been released one after another.

The film 'The Vanishing: Unsolved Case', which was released on the 30th of last month, was directed by French film director Denis Dercourt, and all filming took place in Korea. The lead roles are Korean actor Yoo Yeon-seok and French actor Olga Kurylenko. Earlier, director Denis Dercourt said in an interview with the press, “Korea is a country that the world is paying attention to.” “Everything was interesting and impressive. There were a lot of pros. What surprised me about the actual film work was that everyone was thoroughly prepared. A lot of pre-work is required, but I was extremely impressed by the fact that it was done meticulously and came prepared.”

The movie 'Broker', which is confirmed for release in June, is directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, a master of the Japanese film industry, with a megaphone, and Korean star actors Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won, Bae Doo-na, Lee Ji-eun (IU), and Lee Joo-young appeared. 'The Broker' is a film about the unexpected and special journey of those who have a relationship around a baby box. Director Hirokazu Koreeda, who gave a big resonance to audiences around the world by portraying the lives of those who were marginalized and unprotected in society in each film, including 'A Family', the highest honor at the Cannes International Film Festival, with a sharp and warm gaze. It is the first Korean film directed.

What is the reason for a foreign director to work together with a Korean actor as the lead? Yoo Yeon-seok of 'Banishing: Unsolved Case' said in an interview with the media, "I felt that the field of opportunity is really growing because I am doing a global project." As such, with the advent of online video services (OTT) such as Netflix, the recognition of Korean actors abroad has risen significantly. It is on an extension line.
